Buy domains - how to do research

There are many different ways to research domain names and to find ideas for new domain names to register. The way you research domain names will be colored to a large extent by the intended use for the domain name. To succeed in making decent money from domain names, you are generally going to have to be very quick, very imaginative or both. If you're researching domain names with the intent of making a quick profit  then you are frankly coming very late to the domain name party. So don't let the asking prices for domain names affect your judgment on the true value of domain names. Many top domain name players have set up scripts to grab expiring names off hold as soon as they become available.

Your best chance to make money with domains is to raise the value of them yourself and not just hope for the domain name itself to attract buyers. Itb takes a little bit of work but it can make the difference between selling a domain for $100 and selling it for $1,000.

Domain names for new websites

It helps to know what are the hottest search phrases and keywords today and to know what sites people are visiting.  At the time of writing this article the 40 most popular markets are:

The data collected is based on annual traffic figures (average Google monthly traffic x 12) and US dollar click costs as of July 2008.

It is never 100% accurate - because getting 100% accuracy regarding this kind of inforamtion is not possible - but it is a yardstick for comparison of markets.

To find this information I am using a few SEO tools like Google Keyword Finder, Market Samurai and SEO Book Keyword Suggestion Tool. Of course there are other sites I use too and we have covered some of them in the Marketing Videos on the UrOnlineBiz website.

Other ways to look at trends is of course to go to Google Trends and Lycos top 50. You can also visit New Your Times top list of searches, Amazon Movers and Shakers and eBay trends. All these sites show what is hot right now and you have to ask yourself will you have the time and dedication to create a domain now and raise it's value before the topic gets old? If yes, then go for it! You can make a few hundred up to a few thousand  dollars in a 3-4 weeks with a hot domain if you are sending some traffic to it.

When going for any of the topics in the Top 40 list you can be sure that these are markets that will not go cold in many years.

Researching in the tech industry also gives a lot of inspiration to what is coming and what will be hot. In just a few weeks Googles new mobile phone (the Android system) will come out and will likely be a hot topic. In 25 years from now there will be a new standard regarding TV resolution, the old High definition will be replaced with Super Hi-Vision. Is that something you want to look into and is it worth it to buy a domain now and to hold it for maybe 10-15 years to rake in the profits from it?

Start by noting down what the site will be about, in a paragraph or two. Then boil this description down into 2 sentences. Don't worry about covering all the details - just make sure you're addressing the essentials of what the site will be about. Underline all the keywords that describe your site.

Now try to come up with a domain name that either addresses the one fundamental concept of the site, or that combine two or more key concepts in a single name.

Example:

"My site will be the leading source of information regarding classic cars, providing a showroom and a store where people can buy and sell cars. "

Domain name suggestions: classiccars4sale.com, Theclassiccars.net, classiccarsCentral.net, myclassiccar.com and so on. Try different combination of keywords and don't forget to use the domain suggestion tools on the domain registrar's website.

If you're having difficulty coming up with useful domain name combinations from your keywords, try a single keyword and add prefixes or suffixes. Not all prefixes and suffixes are appropriate in all situations - use your judgment when deciding which to add.

Common Prefixes Common Suffixes
e, e-, my, i, i-, the, online, net, web, internet, hot, cool, our, your, my, you. world, links, site, web, net, resource, business, company, corp, inc, shop, store, mall, search, directory, guide, spot, central.

If you have a budget for your new domain name, you may be able to buy the perfect domain name off its current owner. Most sales take place for a few hundred to ten thousand dollars or more, although some have been known to reach 7-figures for extremely desirable domains.
